Overview:

The advent of generic immunosuppressants has ignited much debate within the transplant community. While these agents appeal to health authorities from a cost containment standpoint, transplant centres are struggling to balance fiscal responsibility with the potential (yet largely undocumented) risks. This webinar will review the key concerns associated with generic immunosuppressants as well as the published experience to date. Topics such as bioequivalency, critical dose drugs, interchangeability and uncontrolled switching between generic formulations at the level of the retail pharmacy will be explored. Recommendations for managing generics in the clinical practice setting will also be discussed.

Biography:

Christopher Daley
Dr. Christopher Daley graduated from Dalhousie University with a BScPharm. He completed a hospital pharmacy residency at the Moncton Hospital and went on to complete his PharmD at the University of Toronto. Dr. Daley completed an advanced practice pharmacy residency in critical care/cardiology at St. Michael’s Hospital, where he subsequently spent a few years working in various critical care environments. He now resides in Halifax, where he has been the Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator for the Multi-Organ Transplant Program for the Capital District Health Authority since 2008.

Jennifer Harrison
Jennifer Harrison completed an undergraduate degree in Life Sciences and a Masters degree in Pharmacology at Queen's University. She subsequently went on to pursue a career in Pharmacy, graduating from the University of Toronto Pharmacy program in 1998. After several years of working in an oncology setting, Jennifer accepted a clinical pharmacist position with the Multi-Organ Transplant program at Toronto General Hospital. In 2006, Jennifer moved into her current role of Pharmacy Clinical Site Leader in which she leads a team of pharmacists providing clinical services for the Multi-Organ Transplant and Surgery programs. Jennifer maintains an active involvement in research and teaching and holds two appointments with the University of Toronto - one as Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Pharmacy and the other as a Clinical Appointee with the Faculty of Nursing.
