Allied Health Professionals Committee

The purpose of the Allied Health Professionals Committee is to represent the various members of the transplant multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, dieticians, psychologists, administrators, social workers, physical therapists, pharmacists, and many others, who have a specific interest in intestinal failure and transplantation. They contribute to the advancement of knowledge in these areas through clinical practice, educational endeavors and research.

Goals and Objectives

Current Initiatives

Promote and advance the role of Allied Health Professionals in the treatment and management of intestinal failure and transplantation. Development of educational resources to improve the treatment of intestinal failure for multidisciplinary teams. Identify opportunities to improve Allied Health professional practice in the field of intestinal failure and transplantation.

Development and launch of ITA/AHP Outstanding Achievement Award to be given during the biannual ITA Symposium Targeted webinar series for Allied Health Professionals. Discussion forum for interesting cases and recent publications. Production of joint international resources and best practice guidelines.

Education and Regulation Committee

The purpose of the Education and Regulation Committee is to foster worldwide advancement of management of intestinal failure and advocate for the establishment of new regulatory measures.

Goals and Objectives

Current Initiatives

Increase awareness of the significant improvements in the short and long-term management of intestinal failure among the transplant and non-transplant medical community, heath care providers and patients. Continual medical and surgical education worldwide, particularly in developing countries, to increase access to all different therapeutic modalities. Monitor and enhance the access of the intestinal candidates on the UNOS waiting list to the national deceased donor pool. Identify and address the regulatory barriers that prevent the advancement of the field of intestinal rehabilitation and transplantation.

Launch a biannual Intestinal Transplant Association newsletter. Coordinate with the ITA Scientific Committee, web updates of new developments in the field. Link the ITA website to the online patient communities and related served organizations (Oley, short bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, etc.) with the creation of understandable, patient-centric information (including webinars, slide sets, bibliographies, editorials) to become the worldwide definitive site for patient information and advocacy in intestinal failure. Launch a series of webinars. Establish a management algorithm and possible care path for the field of intestinal failure including the different surgical modalities of gut rehabilitation and visceral transplantation. Define and outline concepts of care for intestinal failure patients and develop a mechanism for wide distribution to primary providers.

Membership Committee

The purpose of the Membership Committee is to maintain ongoing communications with ITA members about the benefits of membership and ongoing initiatives of the ITA. The Committee is also responsible for attracting new members and maintaining engagement with the current membership.

Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee is open to interested members of the IRTA and will be comprised of gastroenterology and transplant surgical investigators, basic scientists and other members of the IRTA community.

Goals and Objectives

Current Initiatives

Identify research priorities within the field of intestinal rehabilitation and transplantation. Review proposed research proposals and data requests from IRTA members. Help improve utilization of the registry component of the IRTA through investigator led queries or center QI initiatives. Serve to facilitate and promote multicenter collaborative research studies in the field. Provide resources to the CIRTA Congress planning process (abstract and content review) and provide review of content for potential IRTA endorsement of related pediatric or adult intestine transplant meetings.

Monthly conference calls to review and assess progress. Complete the Pediatric Ancillary data analysis and submit manuscript. Impact of DSA and graft monitoring in intestine transplant. Prepare a survey to IRTA centers to assess current graft monitoring (biopsy and DSA) practice over the past 4 years. Based on survey results, work with registry to modify data request for interested centers and collect data. Prepare abstract and manuscript.
