Center-Related Bias in MELD Scores Within a Liver Transplant UNOS Region: A Call for Standardization

Liver allocation relies on the MELD-Na score, which was implemented as an objective measure to prioritize patients based upon disease severity.  Verna and colleagues tested 30 patients samples at 9 different labs in a single UNOS region and found significant variability in calculated MELD-Na score: mean variability was 3, but this was worse at high MELD-Na scores.  This variation in MELD-Na scores within the same allocation region raises a challenging source of bias and disparities in access to liver transplantation.

Nov. 20 - With unexpected findings about a protein that's highly expressed in fat tissue, scientists at Scripps Research have opened the door to critical new understandings about obesity and metabolism. Their discovery, which appeared in the journal Nature, could lead to new approaches for addressing obesity and potentially many other diseases.

Nov. 25 - Researchers of a published study found patients with obesity who underwent robotic-assisted kidney transplantation had comparable patient and graft survival to those without obesity who underwent open transplant during the same time period. The rate of surgical complications was also low.
